Pavement’s picket fence supported AIDs research, now it’s just a good song

Stephen Malkmus begins this song by jokingly name-checking R.E.M., but this is a Pavement classic from the compilation album No Alternative, which was a benefit for AIDs years ago. Probably early ’90s. I can’t find this record anywhere and I’m bummed out because there were a bunch of standout tracks by some good bands.

Nirvana, Bob Mould, Uncle Tupelo, and Urge Overkill are some of the groups featured on “No Alternative.” My favorite song on the record, though, is probably “All Your Jeans Were Too Tight” by a band I never really got into, American Music Club. Great tune, though, as I remember it.

At least I have one track. Hope you like it.

I actually found “No Alternative” on E-bay (selling for $.75 to $20). It includes awesome songs by Uncle Tupelo, Patti Smith, Matthew Sweet, Urge Overkill & Buffalo Tom just to name a few. I’m pretty sure that I also remember seeing this in my older brother’s CD collection when I was younger (I always raided his collection for new and interesting music for my listening pleasure!). Its a pretty great album!

Speaking of good compilations, I just remembered an album that I couldn’t stop listening to in the 90’s. My sister’s boyfriend had given it to me when he received Details magazine. It’s “Music Matters: Volume 8.” If you like “No Alternative,” then I think you’ll really like this. It features Soul Coughing, Son Volt, Paul Westerberg, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Lush, Elvis Costello and a few others. Could there be a better road song than”Windfall” by Son Volt? I thing not(well, Bruce “The Boss” comes at a very close second with “Thunder Road”).

i have two copies of “no alternative” on cd - one with the little girl on the cover and one with the little boy on the cover. i work in a record store and someone actually left a slightly scratched-up copy behind that they couldnt trade in, so i claimed it and sat it lovingly on the shelf next to the copy i have had since circa 1993. i also found a copy of “if i were a carpenter”… that lovingly saccharine all-carperneters-covers cd. if i could find a copy of “chairmen of the bored” i would feel somewhat complete. oh, 90s.
